It was stiff competition…strikes and spares were flying on all four lanes of the Health Net Cup competition held at the Pioneer Community Center in Oregon City. After Oregon City's Mayor Doug Neeley bowled the ceremonial first frame, the real competition began among the four teams. It was the Laurel Parc at Bethany Village Senior Living Community Pirates -- decked out in their black and purple team shirts -- who won gold medals and the prestigious Health Net Cup.

After bowling two games, the top scores for each of the four bowlers on the team were added together to come up with a team score. The Pirates had a score of 877 out of a possible 1200. Pirate team member, Marilyn Gillaspie, was the top bowler for the day, with a score of 278, including 10 strikes! In second place, with a team score of 821, was Courtyard at Mt. Tabor Senior Living Community King Pins. Sporting her blue team t-shirt, King Pins’ top bowler was Carol Thompson, with a score of 248. The bronze medal winners were the Rosewood Park Retirement and Assisted Living Community Rose Bowlers with a score of 696. Honorable mention went to the Pioneer Community Center Pioneers with a score of 608.

HEALTH NET CUP BOWLING TOURNEY STRIKES UP THE BATTLE OF THE BURBS

Brings Healthy Competition on the Virtual Lanes to Portland-Area Seniors

PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept. 14, 2011) — Seniors can work towards getting moving and healthy during a unique bowling tournament without lifting heavy bowling balls or putting on smelly shoes. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, Health Net Heath Plan of Oregon (HNOR) hosts a “virtual” bowling tournament, pitting seniors across Portland’s suburbs against each other to win the prestigious Health Net Cup. “We all know of the ‘Civil War’ between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers football teams as they vie each year for the Platypus Trophy,” said Claire Met, Activities director for the Pioneer Community Center, where the tournament is being held. “The Battle of the Burbs is destined to become just such an intense rivalry among these local senior communities as they compete for the Health Net Cup.”

Over the years, Health Net has held similar tournaments in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California and Connecticut. In Portland, the Health Net Cup tournament is taking place at the Pioneer Community Center, 615 5th Street in Oregon City Oregon, on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Seniors participating in the tournament are from:

*Rosewood Park Retirement and Assisted Living Community (Hillsboro)
*Pioneer Community Center (Oregon City)
*Courtyard at Mt. Tabor Senior Living Community ( Southeast Portland)
*Laurel Parc at Bethany Village Senior Living Community (Southwest Portland)

To encourage ongoing healthy lifestyles and wellness in the senior community, Health Net has donated a Nintendo Wii™ video game system to senior community groups that wanted to participate in the tournament but did not have a game system.

Instead of wooden lanes and pins, seniors have prepared for the tournament by hitting the virtual lanes using Nintendo's Wii™ game system, which is still one of the hottest video game systems in the country. In the process, they have expanded the possibilities for what seniors can do to stay active.

According to the American Academy for Family Physicians, even mild physical activity can protect the body as it ages, extending the lives of seniors by strengthening bones and loosening joints.

“The game requires gentle motion, balance and coordination. It’s exercise, and it’s a whole lot of fun,” said Dr. John So beck, Health Net Health Plan of Oregon’s medical director. “It’s a great way for seniors to put into motion muscles and joints that they might not otherwise use and at the same time socialize with others. It also gives them the opportunity to share something in common with their grandchildren – a virtual sport they can play together.”

Pirates host the Westside Semi-Final against the Rose Bowlers

The Laurel Parc ‘Pirates’ hosted the Westside Semi-Final match against the Rosewood ‘Rose Bowlers’ yesterday, September 1. Competition aside, it was a great event! The Pirates treated the Rose Bowlers to lunch before the event, and then they got into heated rounds of bowling. There were two flat screen TVs set up side-by-side in the Activities Room and both teams had a few supporters that they brought along to cheer. Both teams had mostly strikes and spares, but it was the Pirates who stole the show. All but one bowler on their team broke 200 points. The visiting team also got to stay for a few minutes after the event and enjoy some birthday cake, as Laurel Park was celebrating their September birthdays. Fun was had by all!

The 'Pirates' are ready to capture the HN Cup!

The Laurel Parc 'Pirates' played a fantastic game on Tuesday, August 30, in their qualifying game. Pat Cooper, a Health Net Sales Associate from the Tigard office, saw first hand how ready they are to win the Cup!

“…I have to tell you it was one of the most exciting games I have been to. Marilyn, one of the bowlers, had 11 strikes in a row. I was amazed, I have never seen that. Almost all of the bowlers had scores of over 200; this is going to be a team to watch. I am really looking forward to the finals in September."

The King Pins win the Eastside Semi-finals!

Despite technical difficulties arising from using a different Wii console, the King Pins of Courtyard at Mt. Tabor rose above the challenge and won the Eastside semi-finals! The King Pins played against the Pioneers of Pioneer Community Center and beat the home team by a few points each. The King Pins are ready and are clearing the shelf to display that big trophy. Bring on the challenge!

The Pioneers bowl their first-ever Wii game!

The Pioneers of the Pioneer Community Center had their first Wii Bowling event on Monday, August 15th. It was the first event they've had since Health Net donated a new Wii game system to their center last month. Of the four participants, there were two novices completely new to Wii Bowling. According to Claire Met, activities Director for the Center, one of the novices, who didn’t even have regular bowling experience, stepped up and bowled a strike in the first frame, with two more following soon after. Talk about beginners luck! It was a fun game for all!

On August 6, the Rosebowlers of Rosewood Park Retirement and Assisted Living Center kicked off the 2011 Health Net Cup Wii Bowling Tournament. You will be "bowled" over with how much fun they had!

Team captain Grove Carroll, along with teammates Leonard LeClaire, Kathy Newkirk and Kay Gebhardt, make up the Rosebowlers team and they are all ready to try to win the Health Net Cup Gold Trophy!

Welcome to the Health Net Cup website! The Health Net Cup is a virtual bowling tournament held at senior centers across the west coast.

Instead of wooden lanes and pins, seniors hit the virtual lanes using Nintendo's Wii™ game system. The basic rules of the tournament are the same as in regular bowling. Health Net is organizing the tournaments and providing volunteers.

Why the Wii™ and Virtual Bowling?

Nintendo’s Wii™ video game system and its virtual bowling game are a great way to bring seniors together socially and keep them motivated and physically active. Even mild physical activity, such as bowling with the Wii™ can protect the body as it ages by strengthening bones and loosening joints. Plus, it’s fun!

Virtual bowling also allows many seniors a chance to rekindle their interest in a favorite pastime, even after they may be no longer physically able to lift a bowling ball or travel to the bowling alley.

It’s also another great way for seniors to bond with their grandchildren!

Health Net’s Goal

Health Net is dedicated to increasing access to care in low-income communities and promoting prevention and wellness in the local communities we serve. Health Net furthers this goal through partnerships and events with local non-profits, including the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Project Access Now, and through sporting event participation such as the Portland to Coast Walk Relay. The Health Net Cup virtual bowling tournament is another unique way for us to continue fulfilling this objective.
